searx is nice in terms of privacy, but some instances are slow. >which leads to brave is a good basic search engine, but it sometimes fails on politically incorrect topics >which leads to yandex is good, but captchas are annoying
@billiam@Moon Last week I gave Brave Search a try (after previously alternating between DDG and Startpage) and I was surprised at how decent it was in comparison.
Search engines in general have become pretty bad though. So bad even that paid search engines with supposedly better results are apparently a thing now. Has anyone tried one of those?
@billiam@wakarimasen thanks, I'll use this later when I get SPC's upstream problems fixed. Right now having speed problems and don't have time to diagnose it.
@billiam@Moon I never really liked the idea of Searx. With public instances you’re just introducing another middleman you have to trust, and with a private instance you’re not gaining any privacy either. The best way to improve privacy is to cut out the middleman entirely and use search shortcuts in your browser.
@wakarimasen@Moon if you use libredirect you use one of dozens of instances meaning no one instance will have much of your search history, which is a great increase in privacy.
Additionally, Google doesn't see your IP / cookies, and so they don't get more info about you. It would be better from a privacy perspective to use a single instance than to use Google. Google can do a lot with your data, but some random instance owner cannot.
@billiam@Moon Fair enough! When I tried Searx a while ago, I kept running into instances that explicitly announced that they were logging queries and/or IP addresses. But most instances don’t even have a privacy policy, so I’d just assume that to be the default unless said otherwise. All of that just left a bad impression on me.
Of course the best course of action is to not use Google at all, proxy or not.
@RustyCrab@Moon@billiam Kagi looks interesting but their pricing is a bit steep. How many queries are you using a month and what do you like about them? :KannaCurious:
@wakarimasen@RustyCrab@billiam I am gonna try it for a month. I search tons so I am stuck paying for unlimited. Will report back in a month. 25 a month if it actually works is totally worth it to me. I use it for work so I can write it off.
