Fun fact, new NVMe standards added support for indicating that a drive is based on "rotational media", because it turns out it's cheaper to build systems based on PCIe rather than SATA/SAS, since it turns out that you don't need expensive HBA's that way. So it's likely that hyperscalers will start using PCIe hard drives in a year or two, and they might come to consumers in a couple more.

  @maija @chjara @ignaloidas I swapped my laptop spinning disk with an SSD a number of years ago and the speed difference was mind-blowing and I will never go back to spinning disks for anything but storing backups.

  @ignaloidas @chjara hard drives are cool and yes outside tech nerds buying high end shit still by far the norm
  its still common in new computers and treated as the default, and while I've come across it in a few others computers, I've personally never owned a computer with an ssd. only recently have i ever acquired one but it was tiny came with the computer and a i swapped it out for a bigger hdd

  @Moon @chjara @ignaloidas i am used to speed of hdd and optimize things with ram where i can. it's not a problem for me. ssd's are tempting but they dont last as long and im notoriously bad with backups. also not really gradually failing, it tends to be more sudden with no warning signs which again with my shitty backup regiment sucks. and the thing where you have to care for it is beyond me, not having many writes and stuff. i use gentoo! programs cache things to disk! its gonna have a lot of writes! i torrent a lot of massive shit and delete later! i dont want to kill it so fast!
  
  if they got up to a similar longevity with real world intensive use and writes then i would maybe consider it.
  but i also am scared of change on even the simplest things and i kinda dont want to just because its new and scary lol

  Hard Drives are still more robust so they're better for archiving large amounts of data that doesn't need to be pulled very quickly. Modern SSDs have improved on reliability quite a bit though, even the cheaper ones. You should definitely have your OS installed on SSD, even a budget one will give you much faster loading times than any HDD.

And they have plenty of reliability these days, I for one still haven't one to die. IIRC TBW specs for SSD's are higher than HDDs these days.

  ssds are cheap as dirt these days. You can get a brand new 128gb ssd for 11 bucks to use a boot drive. Would highly recommend that. Everything will load much much faster.

  @dushman @Moon @ignaloidas @chjara oh yeah thats the other reason i wont use them, i'm poor and grew up poorer, i'm extremely stingy and ssds are a waste of money. they aren't actually needed and your computer, even your gayming, will work just fine without it. hard drives are already expensive and ssds are still way too expensive for what youd need nowadays. especially if your a bit of an on/off datahoarder like me.
  i also heard luks for disk encryption is not optimized for ssds and causes some problems like killing it faster?
