    Hey there!

Explore is a section of Mastodon that shows trending posts, trending hashtags and trending links. On your server's website it's a link at the side of the screen marked "# Explore" or just "#" if you're viewing it on a phone.

On the official app you can see it by clicking the magnifying glass 🔍 and leaving the search box empty. On third party apps you can usually see it by going to a section marked "trending".

It's really useful for discovering interesting stuff.

Public means a post can appear pretty much anywhere on the Fediverse and be seen by anyone.

Unlisted is the same as Public, BUT it won't appear on Explore and it won't appear on the Local or Federated timelines.

There's an explanation of Local and Federated here: https://fedi.tips/what-are-the-local-federated-home-timelines-how-do-i-stop-them-scrolling-too-quickly/

And here's an explanation of Explore: https://fedi.tips/where-are-the-trending-posts-and-hashtags-on-mastodon/

By the way, don't feel embarassed to ask, these are totally valid questions!

Unlisted isn't about privacy, it's a public setting. It's just meant to be about not filling timelines with irrelevant posts (things like "Yes, I agree" or whatever).

@feditips@mstdn.social Not really true. I can see unlisted posts in search. See: https://blahaj.zone/notes/9i82hve0k6

It's interesting sitting here on an old version of #Calckey seeing someone on #Mastodon server telling their fellow user that posting to unlisted will opt-out of #search when I can see Unlisted posts in my antennas quite easily [ though I believe this has been rightly rectified in the newest versions of #Firefish / #Iceshrimp but need to confirm]. Frankly, there's little understanding even among admins across the #fediverse about what's a Mastodon / Mastodon API function that is federated to other Mastodon servers but doesn't translate well outside of Mastodon on other #ActivityPub connected platforms like #Misskey and it's forks, #Hubzilla and #Friendica. And simple, up-to-date documentation doesn't really exist to explain the **realities** of federation vs what your admin said was the reality. AP was not built with privacy in mind, and 'security through obscurity' was mostly a Mastodon thing from when folks thought the Mastoverse was the whole fediverse [which has never been the case] and wasn't being scraped by Google et al. Unfortunately we have a cadre of devs across all fedi platforms who'll give glowing lip-service to both the fedi and ActivityPub histories of being built by queer or other minority identities but still won't work on giving folks the granular privacy and safety controls that weren't included in those protocols, and whose feature roadmaps now just look like Twitter 2.0 funded by the milquetoast liberals in political tech who provide their seed money. #FediverseSafety

@feditips@mstdn.social True, except many of those who I am seeing via search are* asking about it with privacy in mind and are** being given false assurances.

I do say it is the same visibility as public, but with certain differences.

But yes it is badly named, it ought to be renamed to something that is less ambiguous. Not sure what that might be though?

@feditips@mstdn.social @queerlyso@fandom.garden Unlisted …… won't appear in search result.Depending on what software you're using. Misskey seems to process search queries differently, and unlisted posts can end up on search results.
