I Beleive the trucking industry really wants to shift to a zero emissions infrastructure on its own (cost of fuel is a huge input for them) but there are a lot of practical deal breakers right now. The first being supply of heavy electric vehicles and battery maintenance.

The Koch’s, Shell, BP, Exxon-Mobil, etc want us to keep spending more on energy and they’ve all got the politicians in their pockets.

Mike Fraser :Jets: (mike@thecanadian.social)'s status on Wednesday, 09-Aug-2023 00:57:26 JST Mike Fraser :Jets: @thomasfuchs You could do that, but I simply don't think there's enough zero emissions heavy truck manufacturing capacity available at this time to meet that kind of forklift style approach. You'd need to start at with manufacturers, maybe mandating a certain amount of capacity be dedicated to zero emissions. You can't force a trucking company to buy a truck that's not available. Also if you don't address the power grid you're just shifting emissions elsewhere.

I'm just pointing out the challenges. It's easy to throw out blanket solutions, it's harder to speak to how it's actually going to get done. Until you start discussions around the challenges it's navel gazing.

I myself am now going to bring up the issue with my transport clients and see what they're doing to move in this direction. I'm also going to try and get a sense of what the actual challenges are and focus on that when advocating for change. It's time for real world action. I do however thank you for bringing to light the macro issue, it was helpful.
