I feel like browsers have started to really cater to people like me. Between the vertical tab system, tabbed folders, sandboxed spaces, memory efficiency systems to help save resources, and being able to search in tab. Browsers are becoming way better at handling people who can't stop opening tabs and are afraid of closing any of them because of FOMO

P.S. I'm not entirely sure how the tag system works here. So I'm not sure if I'm just rambling at myself. If anyone who manages to see this can offer me a brief overview, I'd very much appreciate it.

Hey there, at a technical level hashtags are a passive filter for your instance's Federated timeline. They show posts with that tag that your instance had noticed anyway. (You can see a list of all the things an instance notices here: https://fedi.tips/which-posts-and-accounts-can-i-see-from-my-server/)

There are many other methods for discovering interesting accounts: https://fedi.tips/how-do-i-find-accounts-to-follow-on-mastodon-and-the-fediverse-how-do-i-find-my-friends/

For example, groups actively push all their posts to all their followers, which is better than tags.

@dissonancE @Kara yeah i found this post through the local timeline as well.

as for tips try to use hashtags heavily and don't be afraid to follow or boost people. hashtags and boosts are the only way your posts can be seen. following people who interest you also lead to finding more people. you can follow @FediFollows@social.growyourown.services initially to find interesting people to follow. @feditips@mstdn.social is also a great resource.

@Kara Yeah, I've been using the local tab a lot too. I tried going on the global stream, but that's just way too much content, way too fast. I felt kind-of lost. I'll try to find a YouTube video or something, but you might be right that it's an "as you go" type thing.

@dissonancE Right now, I think your post wouldn't be searchable, or seen through followed hashtags because there are no hashtags in the post.

I personally found it through the local tab, which is all posts from this instance chronologically, not really sure how used the tab is in general though. I also don't really know how to best make sure posts reach other people, I guess it's a find out as you go type thing🤷♀️
