Hi, we are BBC News Labs #introduction

We’re charged with driving innovation for BBC News. Our team of technologists and journalists explore how new tools and formats affect how news is found and reported.

You can find out more at https://bbcnewslabs.co.uk/ and we’ll be posting here about our work

This account is part of an experiment from BBC R&D in establishing a BBC presence in the Fediverse.

I do really like some of the work of the BBC, which is why it's so difficult when folks in the fediverse are saying BBC corp publishes hurtful transphobic things.

I know you are not perfect, because you drove a lot of the brexit crap.

Please behave better on fedi, so you don't get unfederated, which will limit your desire for global reach.

Also please share lots of labs articles, the page linked was very interesting.

@BBC_News_Labs May I point out that in order to be successful on Mastodon, you're going to need to *interact* with people. The (new?) old days of posting into a void on Twitter don't work very well here.

If your experiment is going to succeed, I think you're going to need to try differing levels of engaging with your audience.

Also, there's already a bot account that's reposting BBC News articles that a lot of people follow. That might interfere with your findings if you don't address it.

Are you going to moderate transphobia and other hate speech on this platform? Or will transphobic articles be allowed to be posted?

@BBC_News_Labs Welcome to the fediverse! Please note that most instances have policies against transphobia (which BBC News has a bad history of) and Mastodon trends politically left/anarchist (The Guardian, editorially, would be on the hard right and angling for a block by the admins of most Mastodon instances for regurgitating UK government policies uncritically).

@cstross I’d like to moderate this welcome somewhat. While it’s true that you should respect the local culture anytime you arrive somewhere new - something you British have historically not excelled at - the Fediverse has room for everyone, and everyone has the right to be here regardless of opinions or speech. The whole idea of the Fediverse is to destroy gatekeeping.

@goatsarah @cstross I don’t understand - this is literally *why* the fediverse was created. How is that controversial? You can literally read the founding documents.

Also - you can block at the user and server level, but you can’t unilaterally appoint yourself the decider of what’s acceptable.

@goatsarah @cstross I have no idea what TERFing is, nor frankly do I care.

What I *do* know from managing user populations is that for every strongly-held belief, there is an opposite and (usually) equally valid one. There’s some content where I think it’s fair to draw a universal line, but beyond that it’s all just individual opinion. Which you can express by blocking at the individual or server level.
