     @Moon artificially so. Look at how the browser went from a document engine with plugins for media, to a self-contained lowest-common-denominator all-but-the-os with 3d graphics and sound...

     That bloat pushed the core rendering engine out and replaced it with space-program-scale operations available only to institutions or companies that could support hundreds of developers.
