Zeynep Tufekci once made a remark that’s really stuck with me about how the primary purpose of protests is to •demonstrate capacity• — and the question is then “capacity to do what?“ Maybe strike. Maybe change public perception. Maybe swing an election. But it’s got to be capacity to do •something•; protest alone has no intrinsic power. -

I live in earshot of the 3rd Precinct in Minneapolis, and…I’m not sure •what• changes it. I would say folks “threw down” here, to put it mildly — and our police force is just as violent, racist, and rotten as ever, and just as entrenched.My conclusion from the last 3 years here: Riots do not in fact work. Democracy doesn’t work either. When it comes to police abolition, I don’t know what •does• work.
I am bitter and tired.
