   This is a difficult night. I feel the same fear again that I (and many of my age back then) felt in 1983 at the height of the U.S. and U.S.S.R. nuclear arms race. The near-panic of an imminent attack of SS-20 IRBMs on West German territory and the start of a nuclear war fought over Europe. Taking a deep breath. Hoping we all pull through.

     Nothing really new today, and back then, it was "the summer of fear" in West Germany, with panic in the air. And indeed, there had been good reasons for that, as we later found out: https://www.miamiherald.com/news/nation-world/national/article266075366.html
