   Remember all that noise about how COIVD lockdowns will cause an epidemic of suicides?

   Remember all the hand-wringing how we •have• to send kids back to in-person school, despite COVID danger, or they’ll be psychologically damaged?

   School raises suicide rates.

   Let me repeat that: school raises suicide rates.

   This ought to prompt some serious soul-searching.

     There’s this endless drumbeat of “longer school year!!” — sometimes from well-meaning people, sometimes with a pernicious agenda — that blithely ignores the illogic of “it’s not working, so let’s do more of it.”

     This recent piece from @mnreformer is typical:

     It’s true that school is a source of food and child care for those most in need. It’s also a source of intense harm.

     Like, for example, school raises suicide rates.

     There’s been tremendous progress on combatting psychological harm in school since I was a K-12 student. For starters, many authority figures actually admit bullying is a problem now.

     Still, the fact is when you stuff a bunch of adolescents into an environment that is:

     • authoritarian

     • understaffed and underfunded

     • filled with a sense of boredom and existential uselessness that makes popularity contests the only currency

     …then that environment •will• be toxic.

     Soul-searching, folks.

     @inthehands I have a kid and if I could find an alternative to sending them to school I would.. Sadly that requires other tradeoffs I'm not really willing to make at this time.

     I’m of the opinion that it is both possible and worthwhile to navigate the school system to make it a net positive (and I think it truly has been for our kid, so far at least). But it takes active navigation for sure, and good fortune, and access to good options, and and and…all other sorts of privilege.
