My company gave marching orders for me to check our apps and make sure our consent management platform was properly gating Kochava SDKs from loading.

I never bothered checking why... but hot damn I just read the FTC press release.

    https://www.ftc.gov/news-events/news/press-releases/2022/08/ftc-sues-kochava-selling-data-tracks-people-reproductive-health-clinics-places-worship-other

This is why we can't have nice things. And why I get paid for this BS.

The folks who decided that internet content should be monetized with ads had no idea what a fucked up world they'd create.

The users have created this mess because they want everything to be free. But everything has a cost.

We have an opportunity to reshape the internet and still allow large, resource-intensive, complex services that users rely on every day to instead be funded by the users with internet-native micropayments, but people still haven't pulled their heads out of their asses on this.

We cannot have it both ways. The internet cannot provide the services needed by billions of people with a fragmented indie/smallweb mindset.

Everyone thinks that this has to mean that using the internet is going to be prohibitively expensive, but we have services with a billion users and at a penny a day per user they're pulling $10M a day or $3.5B a year which should be more than enough to run that service

Ads can be more profitable because they're paying a crazy amount per user, but that VC money is drying up fast and hopefully we'll never see a bubble like that ever again

The fastest way to fix the web is probably to force their hand by making ads as unprofitable as possible. Wipe out the entire industry. Make them pivot.

@feld but anyway, things evolved as they did because there was no way to transfer money on the internet. By the time there was, it was too late!

Yes. you're "internet native micropayments" idea sounds like some Web 3 shenanigans 😜 But I know exactly what you're talking about and I dig it!

@feld so there's this big organization called IAPP and they throw these big (comparatively) boring privacy conferences.

At tech conferences, there's a presenter and they have a slide deck and their usually demoing or explaining something they think is neat.

At priv conferences, it's all panels where 3-5 people are discussing court cases and BSing.

Anyway. One panels topic was Future of privacy tech. At Q&A, I mentioned paying for privacy. I was looked at like I had 3 heads.
