   2005 ±10 years was really a golden age for a lot of original stuff and fresh ideas. I sometimes ponder, whether it’s healthy to dig more and more in two decades old stuff, maybe this is some childhood complex. But then I stumble upon a wallpaper with Nika from Guild Wars Factions and the sense of something lost overwhelms me. Well, I was too young for MMO anyway.

     I think video games were far more creative when hardware was far simpler. There are a lot of early 80s arcade games that are interesting to say the least. And even well known ones, like tempest, would not be created today. Everything went to shit when the CPS1 came out. While there were some good titles on it, e.g. SF2, and it's progeny and competitor systems, e.g. neogeo, which had metal slug, the games were very cookie cutter to say the least, and often continued to be so on the home systems that took over the arcade market.

     I really like tempest. The original arcade version is way better than the PS1 remake. And Robotron 2084, though not vector, is a must when I want to have a seizure.
     
     Both embody something that was largely lost in later eras. Today, a lot of games are made so anyone can finish them and feel accomplished. Back then, there was no winning. You were going to die. It was just a question about how high your score would be.

     @Humpleupagus @eisai Tempest is literally my favorite game from the era. I still remember the first time i ever played it in the arcade..man what a rush. Robotron 2084 was hard as fuck lol, but the sound is still burned into the brain. Robotron, Galaxian and Star Fury are sounds that defined my local arcade.
