@skye @starry1086 @moss @MonaApp @feditips Hmm. Most mysterious. Here's my experience & the request I submitted to my instance's admin about custom emoji short names. The admin effected the change. It took me a while to confirm — because I don't know how to add emojis except from my device using Mona — but using the default web interface for Mastodon, I was not only able to invoke the emoji picker from within the compose post interface, but when I searched for "bunny", the custom emojis quoted in my initial report now have the corrected, human comprehensible, short names.

There's no direct way to edit the short names / alt texts, but you can delete an emoji and then re-upload it with an edited short name.
I think this is because of how emoji are handled when typing them in a message? You can actually type an emoji by putting a colon : and then the shortname, so if the short name changed it would potentially break emoji already posted.

I agree, just trying to suggest what thinking may have been when not allowing editing of short names.
You're right, I don't think there is much awareness of how important the short names are, how they should be human readable and should explain what the emoji is.

skye 🏳️⚧️ he/him (skye@toot.cat)'s status on Sunday, 16-Jul-2023 09:39:47 JST skye 🏳️⚧️ he/him @feditips @oedipusnj @starry1086 @moss @MonaApp deleting and reuploading will also break them, so offering a way to change the shortname while giving a warning to that effect would make it that much easier for admins without causing any problems that don't already exist. not every fedi admin is very knowledgeable regarding the tech and those that i've talked to have said that they have no idea how to go about changing them, and they are definitely not the only ones. this is an issue that requires a clean and accessible solution
