@goatsarah@cstross The lithium ion batteries are more concerning, the stuff is quite toxic. And they are not even recyclable batteries, they’re one time use only.
@SpeakerToManagers@goatsarah I don't trust Elon Musk on most things, but he was dead right when he pointed out that there's 20x as much elemental lithium in any lithium ion battery as there is in the highest grade lithium ore: pilot-scale car battery recycling plants exist, there's a profitable business model there in a few years.

So the lack of EV battery recycling to date shouldn't be too alarming—it's slow to ramp up not because it's difficult but because the supply of cells in need of recycling is still scarce.
