I can understand following artists or the odd sportsperson on social media.
But brands????? What is wrong with people

@thomasfuchs I can’t understand you feeling this way and then signing up for Threads.
@arcatech I would like to be able to see what friends that were using Twitter and Facebook but not Mastodon are doing and chat with them
@thomasfuchs I miss the philosophical writings of Steak-ums, tbh
@jesse Didn’t need to follow them usually to get their attention. :)
@thomasfuchs I will admit that when I used to have an old-school blue check, following brands and engaging with them…resulted in big customer service wins.
@brianrepko exceptions prove the rule
@jesse Fair, I sometimes temporarily followed to better be able to shame them into fixing their shit.
@thomasfuchs Nah, but it was sometimes useful.
@thomasfuchs hmm, why not? for example I’d love to follow a NASA account here.
@kommen That’s not a brand. A brand is an identification for a good or service; NASA is a government agency. :)
@kommen In colloquial usage “brand” always refers to a well-known (locally or globally) consumer service or product
@jan If they were on social media, I wouldn’t follow them. I’m not following e.g. Apple or Blizzard or Bethesda, even though I use and like their products.
@thomasfuchs I mean, is there any point where you’ll take a stand against a thing even if you have friends on it? Obviously these are personal choices but I’ve seen you talk about your dislike/distrust of Meta. Is chatting to friends on yet another service worth giving them the views/attention/validation/power? Will Meta always win because “my friends are on it” is the only thing that ever matters?
@thomasfuchs I mean, I follow a genetic therapy company I guess that's a brand. As well as Google Cloud and Workspace but that's professional interest.
@witch_of_winter The colloquial meaning of “Brand” is a consumer-oriented, well-known (locally or globally) identification for a good or service.
Like Wendy’s or Nike or Netflix or whatever.
@thomasfuchs I was just trying to think up justification because I also can't find any.
@thomasfuchs fair enough. I would have considered NASA a brand in addition to being an gov agency as they sell merch, which doesn't seem to hold true after reading https://www.nasa.gov/audience/formedia/features/Merchandising_Guidelines.html
Anyway, I wouldn't rule out following local shops or service providers, which would be brands in that definition.
