   Did you know that each Mastodon server has its own custom emoji?

   Each server admin can upload images :cate: or animations :rickroll: which are available to anyone on that server. Ask your admin if you want a particular emoji added to your server.

   To access them on an app, click the app's own emoji button (usually a smiley 😃 ). For normal emoji, click the picker on your phone's keyboard.

   To access them on the web, click the emoji picker in the post writing box (which looks like this 😂 ).

     I think they're good fun! :)

     To be fair, they do usually look clearer in mobile apps than on the web.

     And yes, there is an art to creating good custom emoji.

     @feditips Custom emojis are usually very, very bad, though.

     People just upload whatever images, not thinking that images small enough to accompany text have to remain legible to be really useful.

     Even ordinary emojis can be too cluttered for their size, sometimes. Custom ones take this to the 10th power.

     They can clone emoji from other instances too, there's an option to copy them over in the admin's custom emoji interface.

     But if I want to clone emojis to my (future) instance/homeserver (sorry for Matrix spec vocabulary), should I mention which emojis are copied from other homeservers as credits just in case somebody slap a DMCA takedown against the whole homeserver because of stealing emojis without credit?
