Is there really anything to worry about?
Seems like #Theads and #Mastodon are two entirely different things. No chronological timeline, no hashtags, tons of ads, no lists, no ability to see posts from those you follow, everything fed by their algorithm. So little control of your experience. Whereas we are free to explore. Mastodon is like a hiking trip. This seems more like a trip to the amusement park. Some people love amusement parks, others prefer to wander more freely.

1️⃣ Threads is single-channel soviet-type TV. where you actually see the same sort of "content" on all channels.
2️⃣ Fediverse is like a public library built and filled by community with public spaces for local amateur theatre, discussion rooms, craft workshops, knitting club, pagan church, astronomy club, STEM & medicine club, arts exhibition and all that at entrance to national park.
I see the difference from over 9000 miles away.

@lehi Good point. Suppose it could also be that some people on Threads see what freedom we have over here and decide to give Mastodon a try.

@mastodonmigration For now. Threads seems like it was very much rushed out the door as a knee-jerk reaction to Twitter rate limiting viewing tweets. I imagine they'll add more features and then eventually turn on the ActivityPub integration. I wonder if they'll ever curtail the amount of info they take from users.

@mastodonmigration I don't see people leaving mastadon for threads, but i definitely see the average person choosing to go to threads.

@koteisaev Really like this analogy. Much of what goes on on Mastodon is serious communication by experts and enthusiasts in various fields. With the very constrained discoverability of Threads such vital exchange of ideas is nearly impossible.

@mastodonmigration I guess the main "nail in coffin" here is that "algorithmic feed" when you can only swallow what is pushed into your mental "mouth". This is what my metaphor is based on, among few other things and experiences I seen here at Fediverse.

@koteisaev Yup. That is the fundamental distinction. It differentiates an application which is passive and just provides infrastructure to facilitate communication, and that which has an active agenda to influence. On that basis #Threads and #Mastodon are entirely different platforms.

@mastodonmigration whatever algorithm it has is awful, doesn't show me a thing I like, at least instagram has that going for it. I'm hoping it'll get better with time, people will leave if all they ever see is unrelatable nonsense. I like the idea of what it could be, but I'm currently just really not into Elon's personal playground twitter.

Well, speaking just for me, but I wouldn't like the forest I'm hiking in turned into an amusement park. I think this is most probably, if not unavoidable. Fediverse as we know it now is going to split, and I think meta won't be unhappy about it.
