   Generally replies are unlisted on here, but bear in mind if you use a hashtag that unlisted replies cannot be found by hashtag searches and will not show up on hashtag follows.

   So, if you want your post to be found through a hashtag, use Public mode instead of Unlisted.

     @feditips I have a question. If my default posting is unlisted, if I reply to a post in a hashtag I follow, do I need to switch to public? Or do I just have to switch to public when I'm about to use hashtag in my own post?
