   @dwarf @tyil You guys actually maintain and oil your bikes?
   
   I've only ever had crappy bikes, which tend to work well until the gearshift and and brakes stop working and then not much can be done except for manually setting a gear position and operating the brake wire manually.

     @tyil@fedi.tyil.nl a hub oil replacement set is roughly 30 bucks and after the first oil change around 1000km you're good for another 5000km, so I don't think I'll have to do it often.

     @dwarf@borg.social Yeah, that sounds reasonable. Doing a bit of oiling is easy to do yourself and its not expensive to buy some oil either, so if you really want to have the gearbox stay pristine you can always do it more often by yourself.

     @tyil@fedi.tyil.nl that seems to be the case here. I've ridden about 1000km on my bike so far, so I think it's still time to do an oil refresh on my gearbox, but other than that they suggest to check in again around 2500km.

     @dwarf@borg.social It really depends on the bikeshop you're with. I generally look for one that values customer service above time or money. These generally are a bit more expensive or take more time doing regular maintenance, but they also just do a better job and are more honest about what is actually needed to keep your bike in top shape.

     Interesting. I was going to plan a servicing for my bike, but the dealer told me they don't recommend it because it's still too early. You don't see that often, you'd think they'd grab any chance they get to make some money.
