I believe you mean the GNU Assembly? https://gnu.tools/

I'm not sure to be honest, I signed up to the mailing list but never received any mail. but from what I could see and gather from the gossip, it seems like some of the people involved became the objects of targeted harassment, where anywhere their names would appear (ie hacker news) someone would seemingly chime in out of nowhere with comments like "you know they are a (((Marxist))) that support a woke-totalitarian agenda to end software freedom to appease their moral anti-scientific agendas, right?", and I think this harassment caused a lot of folks to retreat from public development & free culture.

Holy hell this is awful. If I ever get to meet him in real life I feel like I owe him something. This is the kind of attitude that had made me mostly reticent to post on hacker news, because it is absolutely unhinged.

When will these FSF jockeys realize that for all intents and purposes free software has won? I can think of a lot of proprietary SaaS companies but even in those cases like 99% of actually important software that isn't tied up by media companies (e.g. music, video, movies) is based on FOSS or provided in some open manner.

@thatgeoguy @w96k @csepp @technomancy @lunabee I hear this a lot, but I think the line that free software "has won" is incorrect. A good number of free software developers struggle to work on free software, and all but the most commercial free software projects are under funded. Working on free software professionally remains infeasible for the vast majority of software workers, who never had the free time required to get involved. Closed surveillance systems monitor everything we do. Workers in Africa are subjected to indentured servitude under comprador dictators so that we can extract their minerals to manufacture chips. If software is labor, then free software should be about advancing the freedoms of the workers of the world. So from that perspective, its failed, and remains under constant attack, as demonstrated by the past year in layoffs.

@w96k @csepp @technomancy @lunabee this is only one of the most blatant examples, but you can follow the cookie crumbs from here https://gnu.support/richard-stallman/Ludovic-Court%C3%A8s-Guix-is-accusing-Stallman-of-Thoughtcrime-on-his-own-domain-GNU-org.html

Ludovic Courtès (Guix) is accusing Stallman of Thoughtcrime. By using the same platform that was provided to him by chief gnuissance Dr. Richard Stallman, the subdomain guix.gnu.org on gnu.org domain, Ludovic Courtès is defaming and harassing Stallman for reasons of thoughtcrime (see the book 1984). By that same act Ludovic Courtès abuses Guix code of conduct and kind communication guidelines as set in the community. Hatred, animosity and separation are products of Ludovic Courtès in October 2019.

@rml do you have any link that there was a harassment. I've never seen that, but I don't read mailing lists often these days

@rml @thatgeoguy @w96k @csepp @technomancy @lunabee Jumping in, this sound to me like a political problem: just as researchers working in the public benefit publishing open and freely available research, so should there be positions for free software devs funded by taxes where people work in the public interest.

@pettter @thatgeoguy @w96k @csepp @technomancy @lunabee tbh the best possible climate change program would be to give every hacker the freedom to work on low energy infrastructure projects for an average wage. We currently pay to do this shit (with our free time), imagine what would happen if we were paid to do it, and thus the petroleum guzzling corporations that currently pay us would have nobody to work for them. Win/win situation

@rml @thatgeoguy @w96k @csepp @technomancy @lunabee We could call it something like working-for-the-common-ism or something like that, even.
