Disclaimer: I'm not saying you should do this, it's a bad idea and I'm just wondering out loud.

Do companies that raise hundreds of millions of dollars and shut down without turning a profit face any kind of consequence? Because if not then this could be an interesting way to develop and release the first version of a big open source software project.

Make up a bullshit story to get investments, pay a team of developers a good salary to focus on making the software happen and release version 1 as completely FLOSS. Oops, no profits! how did that happen? Company shuts down, software already out there. 🤷♀️

Bonus points for using the extra money on marketing to advertise the software while the company exists. You most likely won't need hundreds of millions for development but this does buys you TV ad spots and big showy marketing campaigns to make the public aware of the software.

Anyway this will never happen so investors can breath easy knowing they'll merely lose their money for the usual tech scams instead of anything altruistic.

@Paradox you could try to genuinely profit from hosting whatever it is but craft it in such a way that company or service failure would have no consequence on the actual intended product.

@Polychrome Seems it is illegal to lie or intentionally mislead an investor, so you'd have to be very crafty about such a plan.

You could maybe release a paid and free version of the exact same program, and lure them into thinking that'll make money.

Post a bad idea and make it clear that you're not gonna do it.

      Everyone: You're gonna do it.
