Apparently I have been “rubbing people up the wrong way”, but in a plot twist, the “people” in question are pretty much universally arseholes.

    Good.

@A_C_McGregor Pretty much. Thinking about the linguistic loading in that expression tho. In Portuguese, the weekdays all end in A (and are feminine), and the weekend days end in O (and are masculine).

This is because of the orcas thing. According to the lovely people in question, because I am wealthy myself and have a sailing boat, I can't be angry on behalf of people who have lost their life's savings and pride and joy in terror I can't imagine, and then being told by a bunch of pricks on the Internet that they deserved it for having a hobby.

And I recognise this. When I was on Twitter, and got angry because of the way trans people as a group experienced disproportionate levels of poverty and unfair treatment, it was because I was "trying to make it about me", according to TERFs, and could be discounted because I could clearly afford to buy myself out of any similar difficulties.

"Oh, Sarah, Sarah is the most oppressed person ever according to Sarah" was one of the things they said.

These people were native English speakers, and presumably understood the difference between "I am angry because of what has happened to HIM/HER/THEM" and "I am angry because of what is happening to ME/US", but maybe chose not to?

I think this reveals something quite important about the people saying this, that they apparently can't imagine someone seeing shitty stuff happening to others with whom they have a little in common, and getting angry about it.

Because, I guess, if you get angry about something, it has to be because it's happening to you? Empathy and the rage that inspires on behalf of other people isn't a thing for them?

If that's your position, then it's not the take you think it is.

@goatsarah if he criticised injustice when he was poor they said he was jealous and if ditto when he was rich they said he was a hypocrite and actually they just didn't want it criticised. Ish. From memory.

@ailbhe I do think there's a lot of, "when you point out that this is real humans I joke about wanting dead, it makes me feel bad and I'd rather you didn't do that" going on here.

The reason it pisses me off so much specifically, I guess, is because when this started happening I was anticipating bringing my boat here eventually, and followed the discussion groups, and now I've followed them for the last few years.

And some of the stories I heard, people were really fucking scared, you know? When the only people who knew about this were sailors and marine biologists and a few others, seeing videos of people cowering in terror and despair as this gang of enormous fucking sea monsters set about destroying the only thing keeping them from just drowning.

And the story of the family who evacuated to their life raft (being in an inflatable life raft is a wretched miserable experience: you are cold, you are wet, and you are almost certainly covered in your own vomit), begging rescuers not to come near in case they brought the orcas back.

And then people tell me that I'm pissing them off because I think that laughing at these people is fucked up. Just ... no.

@kincaid @ailbhe yeah. If this doesn’t deescalate soon, it possibly ends in the extinction of the Iberian orca.

The Spanish marine authorities could have nipped this in the bud 3 years ago by culling 3 individuals, but decided malign indifference was a better approach because of the reason.

@goatsarah @ailbhe and what do they think will happen when they do kill and eat some poor bastard?

The entire pod and every other one they ever went near is getting depthcharged to make sure that doesn't stick and get passed on...
