Yesterday someone was surprised that I called myself a (libertarian) socialist in public. A bit older than me, but born in the GDR that person came with a suspicion of socialism in all forms and was surprised that there are non-state organised versions too. He asked, why there are no current valiable alternatives around by anarchists or non-state socialists. I thought about that for a moment and said: Because these got killed, murdered and traditions cut off and hanged.

That was an insight. Yes, why are they not around? Because most people working on the alternative are not alive. And most people that came with the reemergent reclaim of anarchism in the 1970s had rarely interest in the survivors and dealt with the traumatized old movement.
And the material available today is a manifold more than in the last 30 years. Still we (as in I) only get glimpses of the "old movement" since there are hardly people around to ask.

What was interesting to me: there was a guy from Hungary who supported me on the instance with that with a few notes on how the communist regime killed revolutionaries in Hungary during the aftermath of WWII.
And that was a common theme: revolutionaries of past times, that survived the fascist regime got killed aftermath when wanting to participate in the rebuild of society. Dozens and dozens got killed throughout the sowjet hemisphere.

Another point is that you need a mass movement behind you to update past concepts, visions, and imaginaries. Otherwise, you run into the same problems early socialists: build-in collapse of group projects because of unmet needs and easy intervention by state takeover.
