@RL_Dane @resuna @sotolf @benjaminhollon @al3x I'm going to stay out of it this time, other than to say that I have 4 Excel windows open across 2 monitors running in a Win8.1 VM on Fedora, because in spite of my stance on running Windows, I spent the last couple months without Excel, trialling alternatives, and ended up right where I started (except now with the added suffering of Win8).

Sidenote: why did I ever use VirtualBox? VMware has been far less painful.

I find Libreoffice Calc does everything I need from Excel, and without forcing me to use that hideous ribbon interface.

@resuna @RL_Dane @sotolf @benjaminhollon @al3x ...factor that's making it even worse is the ever increasing volume of software that's not using WinUI or QT or whatever native framework. That doesn't mean that the context menu key doesn't work there, but I've seen it not function in the strangest places lately. I had to disqualify WPS office for it and reinstall a Windows VM.

      Excel for life.

@resuna @RL_Dane @sotolf @benjaminhollon @al3x There was a time when figuring out what it did was more obvious, because it always did it's proscribed function. It's become more and more common to encounter applications that don't respond to the context menu key at all, when focused on a UI element that does in fact have a context menu.

Part of the problem is that both desktop and laptop keyboards have been omitting them for years. I don't think they were ever an Apple thing anyway. The other...

@gordoooo_z @RL_Dane @sotolf @benjaminhollon @al3x I don’t think I have deliberately hit that key except in “futzing around what does this do” mode in my life.

@RL_Dane @sotolf @resuna @benjaminhollon @al3x ISO, ANSI, I'll take 'em both. Can somebody just call the keyboard people and tell them to give me back my damn Menu key!? 😭

I was so offended when I found out even Lenovo had forsaken me.

Not trying to be tit-for-tat, but I can't stand the ISO keyboards' fat enter key. I want the \| key above enter, not hidden somewhere else.
I think the ANSI layout is so much better for that reason alone (although I understand it has other drawbacks for non-english language use.

@resuna @gordoooo_z @RL_Dane @benjaminhollon @al3x I don't think I have seen that variant before, ansi boards always look just a bit off to me, they are keyboards, but not as my mind expect them to be.

Spreadsheets aren't too bad, because you can do a lot of movement with tab and enter, but anything else just feels terrible.

@sotolf @benjaminhollon @RL_Dane @al3x I know the day will come, but muscle memory is worth a lot, and Sublime and I go way back. That being said, the more time I spend working for extended periods on multiple files at a time over SSH... yeah, it may very well become vim time.

I recently worked on a project where it was that for a couple days straight, and nano wore on me very quickly, and micro was better, but wow, those default keybindings were clearly designed in a vacuum...

I'd say I'm at a very deep level in (neo)?vim, but I've only been using it since August, so both of you have me by several orders of magnitude in time using vim. I'm just at a stage of high neuroplasticity and have been able to dive very deep very quickly.

@al3x There's an entire Jazz instance! Jazztodon.com, there's also a fellow who I've followed for a good long while who does a regular show spinning records of all kinds. Not always strictly jazz, but definitely jazz adjacent. Depending on the kind of jazz you're into, it may very well appeal to you. Gimme a sec, and I'll find the @ (these things were shorter back in the bird site days lol)

      Got it: https://sfba.social/@markmetz

Plays lots of cool stuff. Definitely worth checking out. IIRC he also...

As far as vim and neovim, I'm sure @RL_Dane and @benjaminhollon already have you plenty covered down below. Linux thoroughbreds, and delightful conversationalists.

I haven’t been able to find all the right groups of people on the fediverse. And this makes me sad. I follow a group of people in my field of work and a large # of people in the Apple development ecosystem.

What I couldn’t find so far:
      * people that talk regularly about #vim #neovim
      * people that toot regularly about #comics #ComicBooks
      * people that listen to #Jazz and toot about the albums they are listening
      * people that listen to classical music and toot about those albums.

      Can you help?
