    @thomasfuchs “Carbon footprint” was a term invented by BP, as well.

      @thomasfuchs Agreed totally. The climate change issue is at such a large scale that the solutions needed have to be government-wide and industry-wide. While individual actions are helpful, they can't make a dent unless govt policies and industry policies change.

      @thomasfuchs

      the responsibility of individuals, at least in the west, is limited to voting for people that believe in reification, maybe because of selfishness ...

      voting for scientists exclusivelly would have produced a different society, "but" selfishness and lies ...

      🤷♀️

      @thomasfuchs Sorry, but you can't just dismiss individual responsibility. If you eat beef, you support burning the Amazon rainforest. If you buy nonessential goods, you support unnecessary trucking and shipping. Corporate owned government isn't getting the job done, it comes down to us boycotting, striking, protesting and getting bloody. That may be too little, but it's all we have. If you're driving an RV across the country for summer vacation or flying to Europe, you're part of the problem.

      "Bunker fuel" is what's left on the bottom of a hydrocarbon reactor when everything else has been distilled. It's also called lube oil, but you wouldn't use it to lubricate anything with tight tolerances. It's also used to make asphalt shingles.

      @geobeck @thomasfuchs For sure, as many ports forbid use of the "cheap" system.

      Cheap system uses so sticky oil that people can literally walk on top of it, if it's cold. Closer to asphalt than a regular processed oil cars would use.

      @thomasfuchs Some years ago I heard (from a person who worked with the shipping industry) that:

      20 largest container ships create similar amounts of certain gas & particle pollutions than all of the consumer cars on the planet. But those ships are very weakly regulated, and largely registered to tax havens.

      @autiomaa @thomasfuchs
      A lot of ships have two fuel systems: an expensive fuel that's used within many countries' territorial waters, where regulations are tighter, and a cheap one that's used for the other 90% of the time.

      @thomasfuchs People who have RVs also have home, so the comparison is invalid. While I hate oil companies, we as individuals have a hand in this.

      @thomasfuchs @geobeck For sure, it's not directly comparable in all. But particular types of greenhouse gases are produced more by those massive ships, than by a very large fleets of cars.

      @maddiefuzz
      To be precise: BP "only" popularized it.
      And the inventor is very sorry about it all.
