Can’t get over @inthehands ‘s list of what Minnesota’s state Dem trifecta accomplished this legislative session with a one vote majority. Mind blown alaskan right here 🤯
@seachanger@inthehands Mind blown Californian right here. We’ve never not had a Dem trifecta in my time in the state, and we can’t even legalize rent control on post-1995 buildings.
@scott To be fair, rent control is one of the messiest things in politics. It scrambles standard coalitions, it’s full of weird systemic effects and unintended consequences, and half the thing that sound like good ideas are actually terrible ideas. We mostly don’t have it here in MN either — with the notable exception of St. Paul, which tangled up trying to unwind what it just did.
What we •did• get is new affordable housing construction money, which is a really good thing!
@seachanger@inthehands mind-blown NYer here. I’m so proud of my former home state of MN and still (even after 15 years of living here) so baffled by how dysfunctional NY state politics are.
@writerethink@seachanger Yeah, WI is in a •dire• situation right now. I know folks who teach at UW River Falls, and what’s happening in higher ed there is just…bleak.
And really, I don’t think WI is that different from MN. Just teetered on the other side of the knife’s edge.
@inthehands@seachanger oh, I know. I still follow MN politics pretty closely (and WI, too, since that’s where my family ended up after I left for college…WI politics is YIKES.)
I’m so so proud of MN and wish they could come talk some sense into NY!
@writerethink@seachanger The answer may be as simple as “restoring voting rights and ending gerrymandering.” Which happens either (1) nationally or (2) in a once-in-a-generation landslide election. Neither of which we can count on. Alas.
@inthehands@seachanger yep. My brother and his wife teach at UW Eau Claire. I really hope WI can somehow teeter back to the other side of that knife’s edge but it’s quite hard to see how (at least from a distance).
@inthehands we recently gave a second term to the dumbest of dumb dumb oil company puppets, and a good session for us is when we can keep a far right trifecta at bay by a legislator or two. Never thought I’d see politics as bad as Alaskas the last 5-6 years
