@arroz Hm. I didn’t think about that. Darn. So here I have a bunch of really cool and I cannot figure out who they follow or followers are. Is the solution to manually go to that instance and don’t he search there? How is everyone else discovering new people?

Miguel Arroz (arroz@mastodon.social)'s status on Wednesday, 07-Jun-2023 08:35:04 JST Miguel Arroz @titociuro AFAIK there is no inter-instance search. You may only search your instance, and even that isn’t great. This is mostly a tech limitation but there is a lot of people here who defend that way (and will get aggressive at you if you debate it). The argument is, this way, trolls, nazis etc can’t easily find people to harass by searching popular keywords, so they fight any kind of effort to improve searching or archiving.

Tito Ciuro (titociuro@mstdn.social)'s status on Wednesday, 07-Jun-2023 08:35:05 JST Tito Ciuro One thing I still don’t get about Mastodon (and perhaps the Fediverse): search feels either broken or undercooked. Either way, the experience is subpar. I can tap on some users’ followers and it works as expected. Other users, nothing. This happens in all clients I have installed. Searching for toots that I know contain a certain value (e.g. iOS 17) come back empty. The experience is pretty bad, I assume even worse for newcomers. Why is that? 🤔

I think we are forgetting that on Mastodon #hashtags are king.Change practice; open or follow tabs based on hashtags searches & one can see all #toots that have it.
We had Stockholm syndrome by the likes of #twitter where we are made to do things a certain way.
Once you understand & use hashtags search becomes useful.
Expecting perfection from #mastodon is wishful thinking.
Toots having a #hashtag from allowed server can be found via search & follow.

Aside from the people I already knew from previous networks and other contexts, it’s mostly by boosts and replies to posts from people I follow when I read threads I find interesting.

Miguel Arroz (arroz@mastodon.social)'s status on Thursday, 08-Jun-2023 02:21:21 JST Miguel Arroz @goatsarah @titociuro Just as a curiosity, I was searching Twitter to see if I could find something and apparently Twitter search is now so broken that it’s actually working worse than mastodon’s. That place is truly falling apart.
