it's always really incredible to me when I have to explain basic git usage to developers at work. I really do not get paid anywhere near my skills and experience level

@nyx@social.xenofem.me @MercurialBlack@pleroma.mercurial.blog @dushman@gensokyo.club ime software engineering in the industry requires a lot more social skill than technically skilled people sign up for, and how good your work is matters little

really you’re earning your paycheck and promotions by making coworkers and superiors happy, not by writing good code

@MercurialBlack @dushman it's really ironic that I would describe myself as someone who cares about my code and like putting effort into it and trying to learn the stuff I'm working with, and yet I am basically living on a poverty-tier income as a sysadmin. but I feel like the tech industry also basically filters out people like me who give a shit, because they can't stand suffering through the bullshit that the tech industry has memed itself into adopting

@MercurialBlack @dushman though there is a special type of autist who will put up with the most abysmal artificial problems imaginable and see them as puzzles to be solved by a clever hacker. these are people who are like, moderately above average enough in intelligence to be clever hackers, but not smart enough otherwise (or maybe they just lack a soul) to realize that we shouldn't just uncritically accept all the non-problems that the tech industry creates for itself by having no standards whatsoever for itself -- something which is quite foreign to basically any other professional field, let alone something that is supposedly "engineering"

@dushman the thing is that this isn't unique to git. a lot of programmers don't really know how to use *anything* their job requires. there's a reason why the stereotypical programmer joke is copypasting everything from stackoverflow or not understanding how your own code works; it's because most programmers don't bother to actually learn or understand anything they're doing, because they don't care, because they're forced to use tools that are extremely shitty and unproductive and unergonomic to work with. like basically every mainstream technology, every mainstream programming language, has so much stupid bullshit that makes it inefficient to actually work with. there's this and then there's tech being an industry that runs on hype and speculation, "move fast and break things" type shit of doing nothing resembling "engineering" despite calling themselves such. and this translates to all the hype around working in tech to make money, since for most people, especially young people, it's also one of the only options left for making a decent living.

so the programmers can't necessarily even be blamed for it either. it's a systemic issue. the tech industry is a total fucking joke all the way down

@7666@comp.lain.la @nyx@social.xenofem.me @dushman@gensokyo.club @MercurialBlack@pleroma.mercurial.blog so i came into my current job (anime translation/subtitling) with the same bitter mindset i left software with, because back then the people i worked with really weren’t up to par

but that changed over time as people came and went, and also i tried to figure out ways i could make it easier for my coworkers to do a good job so that i could trust their work

i wrote tools, talked about workflows, shared experience… i’m really glad they put up with my opinionated bullshit and were receptive to advice. it’s turned into a really nice environment and now others are maintaining their own tools too

@nyx @dushman @mia @MercurialBlack the words rang out from the product manager's loudspeaker of a mouth: "Minimum Viable Product", and the room of developers visibly cringed as they knew it would be another spaghetti flinging fest on an entirely unreasonable schedule

@mia @MercurialBlack @dushman god yeah that's so fucking real. it really is just more white collar office politics bullshit. in a lot of cases you're literally disincentivized in fact from doing good work
