   I generally like and respect Mary Harrington, although I often disagree with her. This is a bit of a tired take on why she thinks the young'uns aren't having enough bebbehs: https://unherd.com/2023/05/why-gen-z-prefer-dogs-to-babies/

     @ninapaley I love, love, loved my babies! I enjoyed them as toddlers, too. Then…they went to school, and ever so slowly, between peers & TV, parenting became more and more vexing & challenging. So…although I love my children very much, I highly commend any young people who prefer sticking with dogs, cats or other animal companions.

     I don’t even want to imagine what parenting is like now, with smart phones & such. More & more I feel that many people regard children as an item to be checked off on their to-do list; cute little things to dress up.

     I, too, respect both Harrington & Peterson, but don’t agree on this one. I think we have plenty of humans, and all too many have no homes & not enough food. As for the point that there will be fewer people to take care of the oldies - well, that “care”, (with the exception of a few cultures) has always been dicey.

     @ninapaley Gen Z can't afford to pay off their student loans and leave their parents' basements. They certainly can't afford to buy a house and start a family. I tire of affluent people who have zero clue what it's like for average people castigating the latter on their lack of drive.

     @ninapaley The Youths are being taught that the earth is being transformed into a desert hell planet, they're being coerced into massive debt, they're being offered jobs with shit pay and no benefits, childcare during my workday would cost more than my entire salary let alone other expenses, a cabal of freaks is encouraging kids to take sex hormones behind their parents' backs, and giving birth in the USA costs like half a million dollars.
     
     But yeah, it's the dogs and Tinder's fault.
