How synthetic hormones may play a key role in our sexuality
      from https://www.facebook.com/DailyMail
Can the Pill - and the synthetic hormones it contains - really influence a woman's sexual preferences? There is little research in this area, but the internet is awash with anecdotal evidence.

No! It's perfectly safe to fuck with your endocrine system to the extent that it literally effects your reproductive cycle! 🙄

Of course. When you use exogenous hormones, your body will stop producing them or otherwise alter the balance. When you pull the plug, the endocrine system doesn't just start back up. Gym bros have known this for decades. Thr idea that it only happens with exogenous testosterone is retarded and ignores the fundamentals of endocrine function.

Yes. They've been lying about the effects of birth control for a long time. Sometimes, the effects of hormones are very subtle. It's not heart attacks or strokes. It can be feeling happy, or sad, or paranoid. Arguing or laughing. Slight changes can have very real personal effects that aren't noticed because you wouldn't know the difference. It seems normal when you're always on it. But get off, and boom... you troon out or start eating pussy. 😏

I had a few professors in law school who were of the opinion that there is so much precedent out there that any argument could be made. The only real question is whether the judge would swallow it.

I really don't see science, at least the sciences the affects our political lives, social / soft sciences and medicine (medicine is a quasi-soft science because of its ethical origins and the way studies isolate the effects of substances, which is not how the real world works), as being much different.

Whether a bridge made of taco shells can hold a two ton truck traveling at 50 mph is a different issue.

Medicine is a social science. A clogged heart ought to not beat. The thought the it should continue to beat and the conditions required, available, and/or allowed and the means by which is can be done are all ethical / moral / social phenomena.

      Anything else is just physics.

@Humpleupagus @Epiphany @Evil_Bender @SKracket @Deplorable_Degenerate The natural sciences have clearly enriched our understanding of the world, and even medicine has done a lot, even with all the bullshit mixed in. Social sciences are not so clear-cut. Is the common understanding of crime and punishment in our age more accurate and sophisticated than that of the Greeks or Romans? That should be an easy yes if the model of constant progress is to be believed.

It's not just honesty. It's an epistemological issue. All science gives most people today is words on paper and a requsst for faith in them. It doesn't give actual knowledge.

Further, because the subjects and objects of a study are analytically defined, how do we know they map to reality?

My thought on that question is that if we had definitions that perfectly matched reality, we would also have perfect results. We would see a 1:1 relationship between treatment and result for example. If we see anything not approaching that, we have either have a poor design or poor definitions. Significance testing is retarded in my epistemology.

The sad part is that we need studies to tell us this. It should be obvious from the functioning of the human body (particularly up regulation and down regulation of biological processes based on the presence or absence of bilogically active substances, as well as different people having different levels of substances naturally), including the endocrine system.

I don't think it's just plausible. I think it's necessary. Otherwise, we should presume that such substances are biologically inert.

I think that some people are better at interpreting studies than others, but unfortunately, the state got into the business of regulating who can allege to be an expert. Of particular concern there isn't necessarily the educational requirements, etc., some of which I can understand in a practice setting (though I'd like the whole system and requirements revamped), but rather the explicit and implied threats of revocation of licensure should the "expert" speak in opposition to state orthodoxy.

If you think your doctor is candid or that the doctor patient privilege has any teeth, boy do I have news for you. The attorney-client privilege (short of the crime-fraud and immediate threat of bodily harm exceptions) and the work-product privilege are really the last bastion of confidence and discretion in practice (though there are other issue here).

The dishonesty prevents any changes in epistemology. You do have to simplify reality in order to think about it, but it's rare for anyone to think about causation anymore. Significance testing is the counterfactual problem for 110 iqs
