      Combine that with this:

In a statement, President Biden described the agreement as a compromise which was good for the country "because it prevents what could have been a catastrophic default and would have led to an economic recession, retirement accounts devastated, and millions of jobs lost".
Mr McCarthy, for his part, referred to "historic reductions in spending, consequential reforms that will lift people out of poverty into the workforce".

      > lift people out of poverty and into the workforce

Fat fucking chance when this makes them homeless! They got a mortgage because they thought their student loans were gone. Now they're screwed

I think the government does have the power to forgive the loans, but it needs to be done through legislation. The pausing of payments and cruelly misleading Americans created something probably classifiable as systemic risk to the economy now.

I have no idea what the right answer is.

There was no reason to believe they wouldn't be forgiven. My brother got a check for his. People whose loans were paused expected a check or forgiveness too. They were not even responsible for stopping payments: the lenders stopped collecting them. You couldn't keep paying if you wanted to AIUI

You can take the retard out of the Special Olympics but you can't take the Special Olympics out of the retard.

If they suck at finance I don't care how badly their mortgages go
