    @ikuo1000 Oh, I think many people •are• caring and kind in their heart / mindset, most people, even, and most of the time. It’s not that people don’t care. It’s that the caring has to be triggered by something our lizard brains can understand — and numbers ain’t it, except for •extremely• analytical people.

    Give people something immediate, visceral, visual or other-sensory — a crying child, say — and kindness quickly comes out of the woodwork.

      @ikuo1000
      I’m so sorry that you had that experience. That sucks.

      What you’re describing is just what I’m talking about. Hearing “I’m hurting” from someone else is verbal, prefrontal cortex stuff. Of course it prompts an appropriate social form, not a visceral response.

      Think how many times Black people said “police are violent, police are murdering us for sport,” but folks didn’t understand until they •saw• the video of George Floyd being murdered. Visceral. Lizard brain.

      @inthehands I think it's not even so much that people need to SEE something immediate, e.g., at this point, everyone must know someone who has died or had a bad bout of covid. Seeing it may be enough to elicit sympathy for the case in front of them, but not enough to work towards meaningful prevention. I think most people need to experience it themselves, at a very personal level. Generally speaking, no one ever thinks bad things will happen to them, so they don't take action until it does.
