    How do you read/pronounced #ASEAN?

    Within ASEAN, 9 out of 10 member nations pronounce it as “as·yan” (if you watch/listen). But here in the #Philippines most say it as “aa·si·yan”.

    I just heard a third version today: “ey·sea·yan”.

    ⇒ “What if ASEAN Became One Country?” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3DcvYOlQfgk

    BONUS:

    For those not familiar with ASEAN, it is a regional group here in South-East Asia. It stands for the “Association of South-East Asian Nations”.

    There are currently 10 member nations, namely:
    * #Brunei
    * #Cambodia
    * #Indonesia
    * #Laos
    * #Malaysia
    * #Myanmar (f. #Burma)
    * Philippines
    * #Singapore
    * #Thailand
    * #Vietnam

    There are two observer (potential member) countries:
    * #PapuaNewGuinea (s. 1976)
    * #TimorLeste (#EastTimor; formerly part of Indonesia) (s. 2002)

    There is also the #ASEANPlusThree (ASEAN+3), the +3 stands for #China, #Japan, and #Korea (#SouthKorea to be specific).

    And the ASEAN+6 that, hopefully, will become the “East Asia Community”, and the added 3 nations are #Australia, #India, and #NewZealand.

      @ahriboy Ooooh!!!! And I think there's nothing else stopping Timor-Leste from gaining full member status.

      The last I heard about their membership was they were still lacking in facilities as required by ASEAN, but that was years ago.

      It's about time.

      @tokyo_0 Hmm… yeah, I think I heard from a Japanese news program the “aa·si·yan” pronunciation.

      Same, I also think the “asyan” pronunciation won't fit in Nihongo.

      @youronlyone Doesn't Japan say aa-si-yan as well? That's how I'd think to say it, and I reckon my pronunciation has been more coloured by Japanese-language coverage than English. Combining "syan" into one sound wouldn't fit too naturally with Japanese language, either. 🤔

      @bcmorr Yep, aa·si·yan pronunciation seems natural. When I first heard it mentioned from our neighbors as “ah·syan”, it took me longer to understood them. ^_^;;

      I think that was why you picked-up the Philippine pronunciation, it's more natural to read it as “A-SEA-N”. Of course, not saying the other variations are wrong, it's actually cool (especially since the ASEAN itself did not provide any official pronunciation guide).

      @youronlyone @cendawanita interesting!
      As an outside observer, I have always been unsure how to pronounce it, but I seem to have gone for the Philippines “aa-si-yan” way.
      Funny because that’s one of the 3 ASEAN countries I’ve never been to (the others are Brunei and Myanmar).
      I’ve spent most time in Thailand, as I’ve family there, and I love to travel in the region when I can. And when I can’t, it’s great to follow various people from the area and get their insight and perspective

      Lol, I'm gonna check out that video, but I'll be charitable and say that pronunciation is an own-idiolect of the narrator because not even in my circles have i encountered that variation.

      Oh. And I hope you visit the Philippines one day and be able to complete your ASEAN journey before East Timor officially achieves member status.

      Speaking of Brunei, from what I've heard, almost everything there is free because their king provides what they need. If you visit there, ask them if it is true! (I have no idea if it is.) ^^

      @youronlyone Indonesians say it like you would pronounce seance with a short Ah added at the start and obviously without the ce.
