many people have that teacher or class that “changed their life” and i suspect that is a simplified way of communicating some of what Paul describes.

My unsolicited advice: visit as many other people’s classes as you can. Depending on school / department culture, colleagues may or may not be comfortable, but do when you can. I found it incredibly liberating in my early days to see how many different ways one can •be• in the classroom. Helped me find my own teaching voice, instead of imitating what I thought a prof was supposed to be.
