Do not organize conferences in Florida. After July 1, 2023, your #transgender attendees will not be legally allowed to use public restrooms.

Organizing a conference in #Florida puts all your attendees, not just your trans guests, at physical, emotional, and legal risk.

@estelle It isn’t just Florida, sadly. Any “red” state is pretty much guaranteed to have multiple discriminatory laws on the books. I simply refuse to attend any conference in states with discriminatory laws. They don’t get my money. Period.

@hopedoty @estelle I need to build a "States it's too dangerous to go to cons in" page.

      Dammit.

@estelle Now I wonder--all the states or counties that get bent out of shape about drag queen story hours need to be on a list for comicons to avoid. Can you imagine the fury in some folks when they see cosplayers dressing up without a regard for their own gender and maybe representing a character of the opposite? /s

Depending on the interpretation, it may be illegal for your trans presenters to present as the law could be read to criminalize that as a drag performance.

.@estelle To add further reasons not to organize conferences in Florida, doing so will put the health and safety of all your attendees at risk:

      - Businesses in Florida are now banned from imposing anti-COVID measures like mask, testing and vaccine requirements.

      - Doctors/insurers in FL can now deny /any/ treatment if they have a moral objection.

      - There is a bill out right now to legalize paving the roads with radioactive fertilizer waste.

@estelle I'd be a likely candidate to get thrown out if someone wasn't looking closely enough. I don't dress very feminine (t-shirt, shorts, and sneakers are standard for me), I shaved my head bald, haven't worn makeup in ages, and thanks to crummy genes, I have facial hair that likes to pop out at the worst times. I'm sure that if someone just sees me (my voice--when well--is probably the only obviously feminine thing about me), they probably assume I'm trans. I've gotten questions from kids about my facial hair when they're close enough to see it (part of the reason I'm trying the makeup thing when I don't wear the mask again).

My boobs don't help differentiate me because I'm still obese, as in my boobs and gut stick out about the same distance from my center of gravity... like guys who are so fat they have "the manboobs" themselves. It sucks, but why I'm on a health journey, too (hee hee).

Yeah, unless they heard me talk or I wore a colorful scarf to cover ze dome, they'd probably try to prevent me from going in at first try.

@estelle I wouldn't organise a conference *anywhere* in the USA - too many guns.

@estelle Is this a "trans women must use the men's room" situation or is it a complete ban on using either public toilet?

I don't know, because I don't live in the US and am not familiar with every detail of transphobic legislation.
