Once again extending a big middle finger to the people who decided that having only sixteen volume levels in an Android device was anywhere near enough

@Vierkantor@mastodon.vierkantor.com @schratze@todon.nl Isn't it impossible to do volume sliders in dB because the device has no idea what the actual sound output of the audio device is?

That's why those warning messages about high volume on Android also don't make sense. "Raise volume above the safe level" Bro, I've connected you to my car stereo.

@schratze also nearly all software seems to suffer from the idea that sliders should control volume in percentages rather than dB. human senses are exponential, not linear!

I sure love to switch back and forth between "barely audible" and "deafeningly loud" when I'm listening to music

@Vierkantor@mastodon.vierkantor.com @schratze@todon.nl Ah you mean how some software has a scale with minus dB, as in -0.0 dB = 100% volume.

@SuperDicq @schratze I agree that you can't select absolute loudness until you know exactly what your speakers do. Still, Decibel should be appropriate here, it's a logarithmic measure of the ratio of input (loudness as specified by the audio files or whatnot) versus output (loudness as specified by signal intensity within your speaker cables).

@Vierkantor@mastodon.vierkantor.com @schratze@todon.nl I've only seen this in audio software intended for professionals en enthusiasts. I think they probably consider these units too complex for normies and percentages just make more sense to them.

@Vierkantor@mastodon.vierkantor.com @schratze@todon.nl Considering most desktop environments have their own volume control in favor of the default pulseaudio one, I guess it is something most normies don't see.

@SuperDicq @schratze Hmm I don't know, is the standard Pulse Audio* Volume Control applet considered audiophile nowadays? :)

      * I know, somehow Pulse works for me and I'm scared to do anything to it in fear of breaking it :P
