Been thinking a bit about Bluesky vs Fediverse lately. We'll see if it coalesces into anything substantial.

In short: I don't think the Fediverse competes with Bluesky, and I don't think Bluesky is going to be federated at any point (for the same reason why Reddit never federated).

They have different basic assumption and modes of interaction.

I also don't think the Fediverse is going to become a global hegemonic system any time soon. It'll keep doing well on the margins though.

@edsu Not really, just seen splashback from people trying to implement it and failing entirely to federate with the official instance, and the various obvious security problems they keep running into by not using existing web standards and endpoints (.well-known/webfinger, etc.).

I think they'll have their hands full in the foreseeable future handling the influx, and will remove more and more gestures towards federation as time passes.

@pettter have you found any good writing about AT that has helped you understand the protocol? I have no intention to try Bluesky because I prefer the approach of multiple parties trying to implement a standard. But at the same time I want to be informed.

@edsu To be clear, I think that this is intimately tied to the way they think about the role of social media, and the dynamics they want to foster and cater to.

@edsu Not with Musk at its helm. Twitter is basically cooked already, and I imagine most of the Popular And Cool Kids who haven't already moved to bluesky are more or less about to do so, and most reasonable regular users will follow when/if sign-ups open up.

Twitter will putter around as a haven of crypto scams and nazis for a long time though, but I honestly think it's more likely they try to federate with AP than AT (and get immediately defederated by everyone but the nazis).

@pettter do you think Twitter itself will move over to use it? I've seen some people saying that but it seems pretty far fetched to me.
