After social media gets decentralized, I hope web search gets decentralized.

Google shouldn’t be dominating web search.

@Sbectol You can host this on your own server. That’s a start. Indexing can be built later.

@atomicpoet@mastodon.social ok but that still needs the 70+ search engines for the individual instances to use.. or maybe I'm misunderstanding

My fav search engine is wiby.me . You can even deploy your own if you want to set up one with a custom index: https://wiby.me/about/guide.html

@atomicpoet I used to like one that aggregated searches of multiple engines. I use duckduckgo mostly these days.

Searches are expensive for sites b/c database searches are resource hogs. YouTube charges partner apps/sites a lot for searching beyond a trivial number. Hard 2 run a site where users create playlists if you can't search.

I'd like to see more players and any better methods of retrieval the clever among us can come up with.

@atomicpoet yeah! More searches, more, more! We dont get any good results anyway, all will be banned or just nonsense, or spammed, but there wasnt google monopoly!!!
Dude, you was using Brave, Yandex, Duckduckgo and etc?
Monopoly or not - thats all useless crap, seriously.
Problem not in a google monopoly, but generally in a censorship. And, of course, big companies dont trying hard to improve searches. They only sell positions and advertising.
