@Jain @fediverseobserver @mastodonusercount we can spend a lot of time re-hashing the various trade-offs of different methodologies and data sources, but why?
Not clear any one gains anything substantive by re-prosecuting arguments for or against analytics methods every time someone says a number.
We can, but I'm unclear why we would or what purpose that would serve.
Also, non-Mastodon software users interact with Mastodon users, and so are using it.

Without a source, rationale or anything beyond “trust me bro,” claiming their numbers are false is..not compelling.

And I don't get your point about email being federated...because ActivityPub is federated too.

First off, mastodonusercount has been proven to give false information multiple times (it counts dead servers and misreports in its continuous graph), and that last argument is like saying "non Gmail users can interact with Gmail users, so every single email is Gmail".
