I feel like gen z doesn’t even know how to run emulators or torrent roms.

It’s worse than that, my friend. They can’t even conceptualize what an emulator is. They cannot differentiate between an emulator program and a game rom. To them, the emulator is itself the game to be run.

Some ISPs don't even let you manage the modem on your property - all you get is a black box that has a 100BASE-TX port on it.

While you can use your own router, good luck figuring out in a hurry which arbitrary VLAN and static IPv4 address to set (yes, no IPv6 for you peasants).

@nqd It’s just brain damage design. I also detest ISPs that restrict the management of their modems to some web application on their site.

“My kid is a computer wizard” - never seen the inside of a PC and can’t type with a physical keyboard and has never logged into a router.

You know how they do it now? I didn’t even realize this until I had the misfortune of watching a zoomie “setup” a “router”. The “router” instruction manual instructs them to install an app on their phone through which the “router” is managed. No option to login to a web interface or SSH is ever provided.

      Or setting up wifi…

Also a black box to zoombies. To many of them, wifi is internet, rather than just a connectivity medium.

@meso Pretty much - live next to a data center and get them to run a fiber to your house to the optical interface module to the SFP{+} port of your router running 100% free software - get ready to pay a ridiculous price though.

If you live further away from one, but have LoS, in many cases there's roof space on such datacenter where you can have directional antennas installed - but wireless stuff is usually sadly asymmetric - get ready to pay for that as well.

Otherwise, the next least bad way is to find an ISP that will run fibre to the optical interface module to the SFP{+} port of your router running 100% free software (which uses standard internet authentication protocols rather than proprietary garbage).
