you'll never guess who discovered that the mice had stashed a couple pounds of dry catfood in the hidden recesses of the oven immediately adjacent to the heating element by way of baking a loaf of bread at 450°F

brennen (brennen@federation.p1k3.com)'s status on Friday, 05-May-2023 13:07:31 JST brennen the entire house smells of burnt. burnt _what_ i'm not exactly sure, but it's vaguely nauseating and i have no idea what to do about it other than i suppose we will have to launder and air out literally everything we own?
you could not intentionally design an animal whose fundamental lifeways are more perfectly honed to eat away at my ability to function as a stable human adult than mus musculus & cousins.

brennen (brennen@federation.p1k3.com)'s status on Friday, 05-May-2023 13:07:50 JST brennen @clacke i haven't baked in months, and it's a gas oven with like a whole subfloor situation around the burner with a couple inch gap, and a drawer below that... they've had ample space and time, i guess.

brennen (brennen@federation.p1k3.com)'s status on Friday, 05-May-2023 13:16:23 JST brennen @m455 i've spent decades on this path and have finally, reluctantly, given in to kill traps, though i still use the live ones when i can manage it. they're always going to be a potential thing in old, leaky houses, but in recent years populations around here have just hit unreal peaks.
i bear them no malice. they're just doing their thing. but they will also just absolutely ruin your life if measures aren't taken.

m455 (m455@tiny.tilde.website)'s status on Friday, 05-May-2023 13:16:24 JST m455 @brennen is it just not even worth it to try and catch all the mice with those non killing traps? i imagine they would just keep coming with how they breed. must be hard as fuck to get rid of them. my old apartment had about two near the end of our stay there and it was hard. they are cute, but they can carry disease, and if they die, you dont know until it's too late and its fucking gross, then bugs come
