@indyradio@Houl@foxxo ok, hear me out... There are two things: There is a bug in the frontend, in certain situations it prevents media from loading, press ctrl + F5 to do a hard reload, that should fix things The second thing is if you change your picture while the media server is down, it will save in a inproper state and it could get removed
@indyradio@Houl@foxxo oh and there were 2 outages, first there was a sever outage and afterwards there was a media server outage... inbetween it worked for like 5-6 hours
@RehnSturm256@Jain@critical if it is working, then - (1) since I now know about why my avatar is stuck in default, I guess I can try upload it again (2) if it's already fixed, maybe you didn't need to move the files or add storage
@indyradio@Houl@foxxo nah i dont take your offer... Look a friend is hosting the media server and he has quite a ceph setup and knows what hes doing... It might look not that reliable for you but belive me, it is a way better s3 than before
@Jain@Houl@foxxo that's interesting. I know this sounds strange, but now I'm more motivated to look at Akkoma. Too bad I have so many personal things pending. If the storage will help, it's gratis. then there's the problem of moving your files back from there, but I do move files that large between servers, so let me know if this is a useful offer. maybe if I promised it would stay functional for 60 days.
@indyradio@Houl@foxxo oh well, it would need to be s3 because things wont scale... Well the old media server was around 3tb but that was mainly from masto... I guess blob.cat used around 300-500 gb back then
@Jain@Houl@foxxo well, I don't trust or like s3, so I'll cheer for this, and thank you. I had just made myself a bunch of 100GB VMs for other purposes, so I thought if you needed one... guess you don't. maybe next time :)
@indyradio well that could be an issue but in the first place i route things through njal.la... The media server is in a private basement which i saw multiple times
@Jain btw - I wouldn't have acted like such a wise ass, except that I have seen some unusual things elsewhere. It doesn't take much to get targeted by bozos. Anything they dislike becomes "Putin's talking points", all the really want are targets. At indieweb dot social they actually showed up in camos and puffed their chests, showing off their influence on the owner of the instance. I quickly removed what little I had there, not to be connected to such a misguided effort. These are the same jackasses who created a ruckus at Hetzner, where they had someone sign up with false credentials, then they blamed Hetzner for properly responding to that discrepancy.
@Jain@Houl@foxxo true, but Amazon is the large provider of s3 instances, and maybe the protocol is okay if you DIY, but I haven't tried it. I just KVM my bare metal, because of the advantages I get from VMs
