@cstross @Aradiel @billyjoebowers @JohnShirley2023 But the Internet of Things needs us to think that we'll foil that one smart burglar from our sun lounge in the Costa del Sol because we got a notification from our smart lightbulbs! (or something) How else are they going to get us to buy this stuff?

The 11 Rules of #IOT Architecture
        from Jim
In the 21st century economy, building a great product is no longer enough. It’s what you can do with it after it is shipped that is important. That idea defines the opportunity of the Internet of Things. When the phrase “Internet of Things” came along, I had a bit of an A-HA moment! I’d been […]

@HollieK72 @billyjoebowers @JohnShirley2023 @cstross that's another option, but can't be done with the main light in a room, so some might figure it out

@Aradiel @HollieK72 @billyjoebowers @JohnShirley2023 This assumes burglars are smart and plan ahead. 99% of them aren't and don't.

@billyjoebowers @JohnShirley2023 @cstross the lightbulbs are useful for pretending someone is in the house when you are eg on holiday, to deter burglars

@cstross Here's a quote i love from Stross at the Instant Future interview: So we now have millions of light bulbs with wifi and embedded microcontrollers running obsolete, unsupported versions of Linux with unpatched security exploits, which can be hacked and co-opted to join botnets or waste electricity mining bitcoins or cracking passwords so they can act as staging posts for ransomware targeting your laptop. Worse: some joker decided to add speakers to the light bulbs so they can play music.

I just can't imagine why anyone bought wifi enabled light bulbs, or most anything.
