On BlueSky people seem to be excited about their platform.
On Mastodon people seem to be embarrassed about their platform.
(Please note this is unscientific and it's not my intention to hype or diss anything. It's just the vibes I'm seeing.)

@thomasfuchs This seems like a projection.
@eazy What fascinates me is that a lot of people think it's some sort of either-or, when the real "enemy" is the carcass of Twitter.
I think the more open protocols and the more people on other social networks, the merrier. :D
@thomasfuchs For me(!) it's not about a platform. It's about the people :)
@Recta_Pete There's plenty of people on Mastodon who are very self-congratulatory after like 6 years of the project going public 😂
@thomasfuchs In my admittedly short time on BlueSky the timeline does seem filled with quite a bit of excitement. That said, it also seems filled with the same 20 people being excited over and over again. I haven't had enough time there yet to really get much of a feel for the place, but I'm hoping the conversation there starts to break out of self congratulatory status.
@thomasfuchs as a British person, I must be drawn towards the one where people are embarrassed!
@jlendino @Recta_Pete yes please
@thomasfuchs @Recta_Pete Starting to think I should just run a new BBS on my Atari 800 with some message bases again like I did in the mid-80s
@samf Are you actually on BlueSky?
@thomasfuchs Wow! I've had the exact opposite experience. Mastodon has room to grow and improve, no doubt, but the vibe in my timeline at least is chill, supportive, and optimistic. BlueSky is another Jack Dorsey project, half-baked and basically a tech bro echo chamber. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
@samf they’re not VC funded (currently they’re privately funded by the owner) and they’re a public benefit company (similar to Mastodon’s non-profit) ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
@thomasfuchs I am not (by choice) but I've done a fair amount of research and have observed other folks’ experiences. There are certainly things BlueSky excels at—UX and search being the two primary areas I've seen—but beyond that, it sounds to be a shallow experience.
And honestly, just on principle alone, it's not for me. I've been doing web dev long enough to know that “we're a VC funded company with an OSS product" smell, and where it usually leads. Recent example, Google/Chromium/JPEG-XL
@thomasfuchs oh this is news to me, I had apparently looked at the wrong bluesky on crunchbase! Thanks for this, that was one of my major angsts
