   I find the whole instances-based approach slightly suspect for social networks. Most people have more than one interest or group of friends.

   A portable account that can be a member of multiple instances would be nice, maybe. (No idea how the details would work in practice.)

     @thomasfuchs thiiiiiiiiis. plus being able to follow the public timeline of an instance to at least have some advantage of special interest instances I can't possibly all sign up on. and I would have liked to make this comment a QT.

     @thomasfuchs I think the end game is single user instances and then following topics/hashtags. Instead of signing up for tooter dot social, you buy a domain and comes with a single user instance. The instance will be largely irrelevant then.

     @thomasfuchs why portable? I just have 3 separate Mastodon accounts on 3 separate servers for 3 purposes/communities. Works fine, easy to switch between them.
