    Dad: "Wow, honey, you're missing a beautiful sunset out here!" Mom: "I'll count to 10, and then... POW!" Calvin: "Dad, how come old photographs are always black and white? Didn't they have color film back then?" Dad: "Sure they did. In facy, those old photographs ARE in color. It's just the WORLD was black and white then" Calvin: "Really?" Dad: "Yep. The world didn't turn color until sometime in the 1930s, and it was pretty grainy color for a while, too" Calvin: "That's really weird" Dad: "Well, trust is stranger than fiction" Calvin: "But then why are old PAINTINGS in color?! If the world was black and white, wouldn't artists have painted it that way?" Dad: "Not necessarily, a lot of great artists were insane." Calvin: "But..but how could they have painted in color anyway? Wouldn't their paints have been shades of gray back then?" Dad: "Of course, but they turned colors like everything else did in the '30s" Calvin: "So why didn't old black and white photos turn color too?" Dad: "Because they were color pictures of black and white, remember?" Calvin: "The world is a complicated place, Hobbes" Hobbes: "Whenever it seems that way, I take a nap in a tree and wait for dinner"

  @StillIRise1963 LOLOL!!! (re: only difference) I’m laughing because when I was a kid I used to wonder when did the world turn from “black and white” to “color.”

  @clayrivers That, it is. And, as you said, so many shenanigans. I was watching one of the Justin's holding hands and singing "This Little Light of Mine" in the Tennessee Statehouse. Only difference between the '60s and now was it was in color.

    Mom: Any good mail today? Dad: Mm..not really. Here's a "you're not covering the cost of all these mailings" charity request. You got a "you're not attractive enough" women's magazine with an article on swimsuits that minimize all your body flaws. Here are some "you're not stylish or ostentatious enough" catalogs...and coincidentally, an invitation to go deeper in debt from a credit card company. And here's our news magazine to identify the trend of the week we're missing...and I got a hobby magazine featuring equipment I ought to have. Yikes. Why do I get the feeling that society is trying to make us discontented with everything we do and insecure about who we are? Mom: I suppose if people thought about real issues and needs instead of manufactured desires, the economy would collapse and we'd have total anarchy. Dad: So pitching this junk would make me some kind of terrorist, huh? Mom: Yep. It's our patriotic duty to buy distractions from a simple life. Calvin: Hey Mom, I saw a bunch of products on TV that I didn't know existed, but I desperately need!

  @inthehands @clayrivers @StillIRise1963 I have the complete Calvin and Hobbes in hardcover I got on 1/2 price sale a few years ago, and knew there was a Calvin and Hobbes that was an absolutely artful example of lying to your kid to deal with questions, but had lost the details of how that bit worked to the halls of memory.
