TIL that the US Constitution wasn't just a "thought experiment" based on European Enlightenment philosophic principles that people might be able to govern themselves without a king... It was instead modeled on a real-working example of Native American governance (the Iroquois Confederacy). https://www.history.com/news/iroquois-confederacy-influence-us-constitution

The Native American Government That Helped Inspire the US Constitution
The constitutional framers may have viewed indigenous people of the Iroquois Confederacy as inferior, but that didn't stop them from admiring their federalist principles.

@markiwang The constitutional framers may have viewed Indigenous people of the Iroquois Confederacy as inferior, but that didn't stop them from stealing and taking credit for admiring their federalist principles.

@walruslifestyle - i'm over 40 years old, took honors US history in high school, at least two full semesters of US history in college, constitutional law I and II in law school, and I even listen to history podcasts in my free time... That a 5-minute NPR story has shaken the foundations of my understanding for this topic is mind-blowing.
