It's "port most of your profile from the Birbsite to Mastodon" day. I still need to 'splode that into an actual introduction. One step at a time.

@arclight
Writing my introduction got a lot psychologically easier for me when I remembered that you can edit posts here. I just plopped down some thing, and then went through multiple updates over the course of weeks if I remember correctly. -

@inthehands @arclight I highly recommend, when possible, DELETE & RE-DRAFT, rather than EDIT. Remember, you are on a federated network. No everyone who follows you is on the same version of Mastodon as you. Some services don't support the EDIT function. For example, if anyone on your list is using GNU Social they'll never see your updates and may end up replying to posts that you've changed completely. The only downside to DELTE & RE-DRAFT is that you also delete any replies anyone has made, and anyone who has saved as a FAVOURITE will lose it. Make your decision wisely. If I were you, if someone had already commented or FAVOURITEed your #intro post. I'd just post a new one and make sure the new one is the only one you pinned. #TheMoreYouKnow (I just deleted and re-drafted this post, because I saw a typo I wanted to fix, I had to CTRL+C, DELETED, POST, CTRL+V, but I think Mastodon has a one click DELETE & RE-DRAFT.) -

@gnu2 @arclight
Yes, there are also synchronization races with edited posts: people will see the old version for a while.If there is an urgent, critical error in the post, deletion is more reliable.
Losing boosts, favorites, and replies can be a •significant• downside. I don’t really care if people see an older (less awesome but still perfectly fine) draft of my intro.
Engineering is all tradeoffs, always.
