@atomicpoet @sambook Its technically possible now, but I think it'll get really interesting once Mastodon gets Markdown into its public release.

You could currently follow a Substack writer via email, and automate that the email gets reuploaded on wordpress. Enable Activitpub on the WordPress blog, and now you can follow the blog in Mastodon.

I definitely agree that the substack owners dont have an interest in making this happen, but thats the fun part of open platforms, we can just do it

Pains me to say this, but I don't think institutional journalists will be flocking to the Fediverse any time soon.

And as much as individual journalists might be all right, their work is largely compromised by the Rupert Murdochs of the world.

If we want great journalism on the Fediverse, we’re going to have to build this ourselves.

A near-term solution is with Friendica Groups, which can be moderated.

But long-term, we’ll need co-ops and non-profits to make this happen.

@atomicpoet what do you think about substack? how about we integrate substack into activitypub?

@sambook It’s a proprietary platform. One benefit is that distribution happens via email. But I don’t think folks who run Substack have an interest in ActivityPub.

@atomicpoet @sambook As for why I'm saying its waiting for Mastodon to get Markdown:

I actually enabled full posting to Activitypub on my website (not via link), and here is how that looks:
      https://main.elk.zone/mastodon.social/@LaurensHof89@fediversereport.com

This is incidentally also why I havent really advertised I'm using this feature yet, because its simply not a good user experience yet.

@atomicpoet @sambook You also need a consistent way to enable a post to be half hidden behind a CW. People arent going to boost a 3000 word page in their feeds, but they will if its 500 characters with the option to show the rest of the post that expands to the full 3000 words.

@atomicpoet As someone trying to build a journalism experiment from scratch on the fediverse, I fully agree with Chris on this. Longterm it really seems like co-ops and non-profits are the best solution.
