   Actually I think I am over "ally" as a concept and as a word. There should not be a special label or category for "people who are not bigoted toward me." That should just be the default expectation for a person.

     @est I try hard not to act with prejudice toward anyone, but I wouldn't claim to be an "ally", as I haven't really made much effort to make things better. I think it takes a bit more than non-bigotry to be an ally.

     @est far too often "ally" is a performative cop out and way to make only themselves feel better. For example, against my very verbal protests, my family kept going to a certain chicken-centric fast food restaurant that is closed on Sunday. And they kept going, until I pointed out to them that they couldn't continue to call themselves allies while giving money directly to an establishment that openly turns around and gives that same money to homophobic organizations. Imagine if everyone who calls themselves an "ally" took direct action to actually BE an ally!

     Ally to me means someone who has my back when people who otherwise aren't bigots would still call me a crackpot socialist for suggesting we try to improve society a little bit.
